As time goes by….

Ci sono delle cose che ti hanno accompagnato per tutta la vita, e ti sembra impossibile che ad un certo punto possano scomparire come se a nessuno gliene importasse più nulla. Certo, ci son cose che scompaiono perchè non hanno più ragione di essere. Vengono superate dai cambiamenti generazionali e dalle nuove tecnologie. Quando a novembre 2011, a New York, mi è stato detto che non esistevano più negozi di dischi ma solo due tre negozi che vendevano dischi e cd usati mi sono sentito un po’ sperduto. L’idea che il consumo di musica sia diventato esclusiva del download e di conseguenza “musica liquida” senza più nessun supporto fisico e visivo mi faceva star male. Non tanto per il fatto che, giustamente, il mondo cambia e di conseguenza cambiano le tecnologie, il modo di vivere e di consumare, ma perchè la qualità della musica ed anche la sua bellezza fisica, rappresentata dalle magnifiche cover degli LP e poi nelle miniature dei CD si andava completamente a perdere. Ora la musica, invece di essere patrimonio qualitativo per tutti diventa patrimonio qualitativo solo per i collezionisti. Per tutti gli altri c’è il download! Addio al suono profondo e pastoso degli analogici Lp, ora si ascolta con cuffiette dai telefonini. (comoda, come la filodiffusione!). Tornato in Europa, dove negozi che vendono dischi ce ne sono ancora, ho incominciato a fotografare quella bellezza che forse scomparirà anche qui. Fotografo le copertine che mi ritornano alla memoria, ma anche cover che attirano la mia attenzione. Le fotografo guardandole come oggetti dai quali voglio estrarre una bellezza che va anche oltre il loro apparire, cerco un taglio, un particolare, una rifrazione della luce che cambia completamente la copertina stessa trasformandola in qualcosa di nuovo, da un punto di vista differente. Essendo all’interno di negozi, principalmente l’atteggiamento è quello della foto “rubata” come se fossi un paparazzo di copertine di dischi. Cogli l’attimo e passi ad un altro soggetto.
La maggior parte delle foto presenti in questo libro sono state scattate tra febbraio 2012 e aprile 2014. A Parigi, Milano, Londra, Zurigo, New York e qualche mercatino.
There are such things that have followed you for a lifetime and it seems impossible when, suddenly, they disappear as if nobody cares. Certainly some of them vanish since they have no more reason to be; they are simply obsolete, when generation changes and new technologies get the better of them. When in November 2011, in New York, I was told that there were no more LP stores, apart from a couple or three stores of used LPs and CDs, I felt a little lost. The idea that music fruition had become a simple exclusive for download, with a consequence of “liquid music” with no physical nor visual support, made me feel sick. This feeling was not supported by the just fact that the world changes and, as a consequence, technologies, lifestyle and consumption change with it; the deep reason in it was the complete loss of music quality as much as its physical beauty represented in those magnificent LP covers and, lately, in CD miniatures. Nowadays music, instead of being a qualitative patrimony for everyone, turns into a qualitative heritage for collectors only. For the remaining ones, there goes the download! Say goodbye to the analogical LP’s deep and mellow sound, now you can listen to music with earphones from your smartphone (as easy as wired wireless). Once I came back to Europe, where you can still find LP stores, I started taking pictures of that beauty that maybe is going to disappear here too. I choose those covers that come to memory, but also those ones that catch my eye. I take them as object which I want to extract beauty from, a beauty that goes beyond the way they appear; I look for a cut, a particular, a light refraction that can completely change the cover itself, turning it into something new, as from a new point of view. Since I take pictures inside LP stores, the main attitude is the one of a “stolen picture”, as if I were a paparazzo of LP covers: seize the moment and then move to another subjetc.
Most of the pictures in this book have been taken between February 2012 and March 2014 in Paris, Milan, London, Zurich, New York and a few market places.
